Casio G' G'zOne ravine 2 - no camera (Verizon Wireless)

The good: The Casio G' G'zOne ravine 2 has a permanent building should withstand a lot of abuse. Call quality is admirable, and the navigation controls are spacious and easy to use.

The bad: The Gorge-2 has a 2.5 mm headset jack and the photo quality is subpar.

The bottom line: The Casio-G' G'zOne Casio continues long tradition of ultrarugged phones with the bonus of improved quality.

Editors Note: Although we read the Canyon-2 with a camera, comes the handset without a shooter. This is the only difference between the two models.

If Casio are the phones for something known, it is their extreme durability. And in this context of the new G' G'zOne ravine 2 keeps the company standard. Like the original Gorge, the commandand the other G' G'zOne models before them should withstand the gorge just about every physical conditions, and offers at the same time a mid-range feature set that contains the roaming world, 3 g support and push-to-talk (PTT). Sure, the design is extensive and still disappointing photo quality but quality on Verizon Wireless is his, that improves earlier handsets.

Design
It would be difficult to confuse the Gorge 2 for any other mobile phone. It is large (4.33 inches long from 1.99 cm wide x 0.83 cm deep) and hard (4.85 ounces), and it sports features as a ribbed hinge and a ring to the external display. It is far from right, but that is not really the point of a durable phone. And if you don't know that it was a Verizon device, the black and red color scheme is you this.

The thick plastic skin stands also, especially, if you jump in the Gorge-2 from a trendy thin handset are. The absence of sidings was all rubber surprisingly, but the Canyon has a solid, comfortable feeling that inspires confidence. And even with the additional bulk of the listener slips easily into larger bags.

Casio promises that the handset, shock, dust, vibration, salt fog, humidity, to withstand high and low temperatures and dipping in water can. Casio has claims on its websitethat displays most of them to keep a handy list of this durability. We gave the Gorge 2 bath, put it in the freezer, it dropped on a hard surface, and in general it turned (now I need to find only a few salt fog). In any case it survives and stopped ticking. The moving parts, such as the oversized ribbed hinges, are built to last.

The Gorge thick skin and sturdy hinge contribute to longevity.

1.38-External LCD monitor shows the usual information, including date, time, signal strength, and caller ID. The display is full color, and, although we prefer basic functions to access, without to open the phone.

The camera lens and Flash are on the back of the phone, but there are no mirrors for vanity shots. The rear cover is secured by a safety device to protect against moisture and dust, but it's still easy to remove. Fortunately, the MicroSD card slot on the right spine just below imposing micro-USB connector is located. Both have lock covers, as you'd expect on a permanent device. Are voice on the left spine a bright red PTT/shortcut key (which you can program), the volume rocker and the command key. All are easy to find, if you keep the Gorge 2 to your ear feel. On the other hand, the headset jack is only 2.5 mm, so you must use an adapter for most headphones.

The Gorge-2 is so hard, nor can it a bath.

The internal TFT display measures 2.2 inch 320 x 240 pixels with a resolution of full color. As you would expect, it is nowhere near close to a fancy Smartphone display, but it doesn't have to be. Colors are bright graphics look fine, and the standard menu designs (you can choose formats between grid and list) are easy to navigate. You have the usual set of options, such as changing the brightness, the lighting time, choose display theme and wallpaper, menu and font size, and the banner.

I could not questions for a better design for the navigation controls. It is a great silver toggle with a central OK button that you can program one - touch access to give four features. All around are two soft keys, a camera control and a combination shortcut for the handsfree and activation of the camera Flash as a steady light. In comparison with many phones that sets a useful set of keys, the the best features within easy reach.

The Gorge-2 keyboard keys have a comfortable, spacious design.

Further down, there are the usual talk and end/power keys and a clear button, which opens the GPS functions with holding down. The keyboard buttons below have a spacious tactile design. There is plenty of room for fast text, and you can choose. I liked the bright backlight and the large numbers and characters on the keys.

Functions
The Gorge is 2 main function call, if it is not without some productivity options. I will first start with the basics. The phone book contains 1,000 contacts with room in each entry for multiple fields. There is also a separate PTT phonebook that contains an additional 500 contacts; You can plug in with other Verizon PTT phones. Verizon Backup Assistant stores your contacts on the carrier servers for safe-keeping.

ZTE result M (MetroPCS)

The good: The ZTE score M design is robust, but easy. The quality is decent and the battery is longer lasting.

The bad: The score of M-display has a narrow point of view, the processor is slow and it comes with a lot of bloatware.

The bottom line: Although the ZTE satisfactory result M calls, not its sluggish processor and the network speeds of trouble value.

If you think that you have déjà vu, you're not. You have seen the ZTE result M before, but as a cricket wireless device (there are not the "M" in the name have). When was it in that network, it had a smaller battery (1, 200mAh, compared to 1, 500mAh in this one) and cricket the Muve music service.

But not music lovers despair, as MetroPCS has back. If you pay an additional $60 per month over $99 no-contract price, get not only unlimited talk, text, data and E-mail, but also unlimited song downloads from Rhapsody music. Otherwise, the data of the phone remains relatively the same, which means that it is still the same problems. Despite his decent call and audio quality I could get just past the glacial processor and lousy display.

Editors Note: Because they are nearly identical devices, score lends our report for the ZTE M on MetroPCS network strongly from our review of the ZTE-Score on Cricket Wireless.

Design
The ZTE result M is slightly larger than the original score because of the pushed-in battery. The m measures 4.4 cm high and 2.44 inches wide. At 0.54 inch thick, it has a very stable build, but it has slipped a little bulky, as in a slim Jean pocket. This does not mean, it's too hard, in fact, it weighs only 4.8 ounces, but its thickness is obvious.

The device has a black glossy coating and the back consists of a rubberized textured material, the the listener a sporty feel, there are. I personally not a fan of (I have a thing against clusters of small holes), but it easier to access the cell phone.

The ZTE result M rubber offers again rubbing against smooth surfaces.

On the left side, you can plug it with the micro-USB port, which is protected by an attached door free of charge. At the top is the sleep/power button and a 3.5 mm-plug. On the right side there is a volume rocker and it follows a small door for your MicroSD card slot. The supplied SD card is 2 GB. To get it out, press it, so that it will pop. This has all the short nails or large fingers may be difficult, but it is not impossible.

In this slot, there is a special camera button. Keep them for a few seconds and the camera app is opened. This will only work if the display is enabled and unlocked your phone is.

The camera lens is on the back of the handset. Below there is a small slot for the speakers. You can find easily a lithium-ion battery support by a small indent on the left side of the device pop.

The score-M 3, 5-inch HVGA touch screen resolution only 320 x 480 pixels at 165ppi shows so lush graphics you do not expect. Apart from the heavily pixelated pictures I saw of menu items and videos (also the simple outlines of the circles in the settings app was fuzzy), I also thought that appeared the screen "Bacon." be it my eyes that were the problem, was scrolling through my apps a bit disgusting, because all fuzzy lines, which pushed the symbols. The display has a narrow point of view. If I the device a little from each side tilted, it was difficult or almost impossible to make, what was on the screen.

Under the screen, are the four usual menu, home, back and search buttons the weak light, above, if you touch them. My biggest problem with the original score cricket network was that the display is not completely reacted. I had below set to register, to push my movements. On MetroPCS unit however I found it very much be sensitive.

Functions
The ZTE result M runs on MetroPCS network and powered by a 600 mHz Qualcomm processor. These two factors make it not the fastest thing on Earth, but for some of your basic functions such as calls, calculating tip and text messaging, will it do the trick. Apropos text comes telephone preinstalled with the Swype input feature.

As an Android phone for a lot of standard Google apps like Google Books, Gmail, maps with navigation, search, places, talk, and YouTube. As this not the latest and greatest, which is on the market, either the hottest OS, expect you non-- the device is delivered with gingerbread.

There are also a handful of MetroPCS apps, that some might find useful. And because they are uninstalled, you must stick with them. These include: Metro own brand of cards, letters, app market and Web browsing; M Studio, the media files as ring tones saved; a Wi-Fi hot-spot app called MetroPCS easy WiFi; Near Metro411, which seeks and finds for the nearby shops and restaurants; Entertainment and media app of called MyExtras; and MyMetro we check your account balance and plan.

You rarely found a number of basic tasks management applications often in most devices, such as a clock with alarm clock functions, a calculator, Bluetooth 2.1, a calendar, text messaging, a voice recorder and a news and weather app apps as well as IN the social, which consolidates your social networking portals; the called mobile media suite Pocket Express; and loopt, you can use the your location and restaurant-check-in the to share with friends. There are also three Yahoo apps branded: sport news app Sportacular, Yahoo movies, and responses.

Parrot MiniKit +.

The good: The Parrot mini kit + provides handsfree and A2DP audio streaming. It automatically downloads the phone book from paired phone, activate the voice dialing stored contacts. The noise - and echo-reducing microphone provides clear calls.

The bad: Speaker quality is passable good but could stand a little improvement.

The bottom line: The Parrot MiniKit + makes good use of his voice controls and excellent microphone for clear calls and to provide a safer driving experience.

If the above product looks familiar, don't be surprised. The Parrot MiniKit + shares not only a design, but also its name with the previously tested Parrot MiniKit slim. I was a bit nonplussed, about which the suffix change slim up + meant, but it turns out that Parrot already great performance across the Board has made incremental changes to the MiniKit.

Design
As regards the design, different not the mini kit + the original MiniKit slim. The dimensions are approximately the same: 2.4 inches wide, 4.3 inches long, and about 1.1 inches deep at the thickest end. The device is now black, black and silver, but the company at the end of the unit is flanked on the same control knob by calling accept still home and stop buttons.

The rest of the device user-oriented area a flat panel speakers, dominated the is loud and clear for the part of the audible spectrum, that the average human voice in lives, but is probably too tinny and distorted "pleasant." be called then again, just because the mini kit + can play means music not that it designed was or should be used for something.

The device measures a vehicle with a thin, wire hanger, which sits flush with the device chassis when not in use and stretches to accommodate themselves to the most sun visors. The hood of your vehicle is simply too thick, contains also a rubber band, targeting Parrot, wraps around the mini kit + to give something.

The mini Kit + ships with a 12-volt USB mains adapter and a length of USB cable to charge your headset with mini-USB connector (located on the edge of the device). The mini kit + can be used with or without the power adapter you get its internal battery, up to 12 hours of talk time, 15 days stand by mode, or a combination thereof with a charge of 3.5 hours. The device achieved this extremely long standby time by shutting down almost completed, when not in use is or when away from a paired phone and reactivate, if his internal motion sensor noticed that again the vehicle had entered you crush the chassis with your body weight.

Functions
The Bluetooth-powered Parrot MiniKit + really only makes two things: serve as a hands-free device with hands free profile enabled devices and audio streams of A2DP-enabled devices. The latter function is rather a bonus as a real selling point, but we come back, that at the moment.

After pairing with a Bluetooth enabled phone via a four-digit PIN, tried the mini Kit + automatically, download the users address book. Also an option to an address book sync is available in menus of the device manually solve. There is room in the internal memory for a claimed 2,000 contacts per paired phone, and since the mini kit + pair data for up to 10 phones can remember which brings the maximum number of stored contacts to 20,000.

LG Viper (Sprint)

The good: The LG Viper is eco-friendly, superb records video in 1080p HD, and comes with an NFC chip that lets you wirelessly transfer data to other NFC-enabled devices.

The bad: The LG Viper can only run on Sprint's 3 g network for now, and users can't update to ice cream sandwich yet. Is subpar as well audio quality.

The bottom line: Although many of its features still won't be available by the time it hits stores, the LG Viper is a reliable, environmentally conscious device with an excellent camera.

Back at CES in January, Sprint announced its first two 4 g LTE smartphones, the LG Viper and the Samsung Galaxy nexus. Both will be out April 22, but for this review we're going to focus on the Viper. Touted as an eco-friendly midrange device, it is certified platinum by Underwriters Laboratories for fulfilling the highest level of environmental and sustainability requirements. In addition, the company says it avoided using many common but environmentally sensitive materials including brominated flame retardants, polyvinyl chloride and nickel in manufacturing this phone.

But being green isn't the Viper's only attraction. It's also equipped with on NFC chip and Google Wallet, so you can purchase items wirelessly, transmit data, and share tags with other NFC-enabled devices.

As mentioned, the handset is available, aptly enough, on earth day, April of 22nd it'll set you back an affordable $99.99 after you send in a $50 mail-in-rebate and sign a two-year contract.

Editors' note: When this piece what originally published it which incorrectly reported that Google Wallet was not activated for users. In actuality, it what not activated only in our early demo device.

Design
The LG Viper measures 4.59 inches tall, 2.44 inches wide, and 0.46 inch thick. Weighing in at a hefty 5 ounces, the device felt heavy in my hands. Although it's not very thin, it's slim enough to slide into a jeans back pocket or toss into a bag.

It has a 4-inch WVGA touch screen, which can display 16.7 million colors and has a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels. The display also has appear extra vivid 700 nits of brightness, so colors, images, and video. HQ YouTube videos were rich, and games like Temple run were vibrant.

The screen what is so responsive, making swiping through pages, pinch zooming and text messaging a breeze. Above the screen in the right-hand corner is a VGA front-facing camera for vanity shots and video chatting. Below are the four standard navigational keys that light up during use: home, menu, back, and search.

On the left side of the phone, there is a volume rocker with a micro-USB port below it up top are a sleep/power button and a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

While the handset's casing is made out of 50 percent recycled plastics, it certainly doesn't feel cheap. The Viper has a sturdy feel with tapered edges, and its plastic backing looks much more luxurious, resembling steel or metal. The rear-facing camera sits at the top center of the back, next to the LED flash. Below, there is a thin slit for the output speaker. Using a small indent at the bottom of the device, you can remove the back casing and gain access to the 1, 700mAh battery and the 4 GB microSD slot, which can be expanded up to 32 GB.

Although made out of plastic, the backing has a neat, sleek metallic finish to it.

Features
Despite its 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, the LG Viper wasn't as swift and snappy as expected. There would be a slight but noticeable lay while I transitioned through apps, clicked back home and autorotated. When multiple apps were opened, it took a couple of extra milliseconds to execute its task.

The device runs on Android 2.3 gingerbread and is expected to be upgradable to ice cream sandwich later on. It's a bit disappointing that this gingerbread is out of the box while the Galaxy nexus is ICS. But it contains all the Google goodies you've come to expect: Google Books, Gmail, plus, search, latitude, maps with navigation, Messenger, shopper, music, talk, YouTube, and the play store.

The phone that is equipped with an NFC chip inside for wireless communication with other NFC-enabled devices, and Google Wallet, so you can purchase items with your handset through credit card information stored in your Google account. Unfortunately, Google Wallet what not activated on our early demo device, so I wasn't able to test drive this feature. Until I get more information, I'll keep you posted. Another feature called tags lets you organize all the things you tag and share through your NFC chip, like texts, URLs, and pictures.

Sprint well as included its selection of apps, with two sports apps (NASCAR Sprint Cup Mobile and NBA mobile), two media apps (one just for music, the other for TV shows and movies), and Sprint zone, an app that keeps you in the loop for Sprint devices & news. If you don't want updates about random NASCAR drivers, NBA teams you know nothing about, or have no interest in the entertainment industry, you can, fortunately, delete those apps.

Equipped with Sprint ID, this handset has a customization feature that lets you tailor your home screens with preselected apps, widgets, ringtones, and other items depending on which ID profile you install. There are 42 packs so far, catering to a number of interests including music (CMT and MTV have a Sprint ID pack), sports (ESPN, fantasy football), and colleges like UC Davis (go, Aggies!).

Aside from the fact that the packs are unsightly, deleting on ID package won't uninstall the apps that you've downloaded. Instead, you'll have to manually remove each app. You also can't remove the Sprint ID app from the home screen's dashboard, so if you're not a fan, you'll just have to ignore it.

Other task management apps and goodies include a Web browser, Swype typing, a calculator, a calendar, a clock, Flash Player, a news and weather app, the mobile office suite known as of Polaris Office, smart share (where you can upload and distribute media to other DLNA-enabled devices), TeleNav GPS navigation, and a voice dialer.

Samsung Brightside (Verizon Wireless)

The good: The Samsung Brightside has a comfortable slide-out QWERTY keyboard, decent call quality, and a design that takes advantage of voice commands.

The bad: If you can't stomach an iffy screen resolution, a mediocre camera, and a laggy processor, then don't buy the Samsung Brightside.

The bottom line: The Samsung Brightside isn't my all-time favorite feature phone, thanks to its exposed touch-screen menu, low-res screen, and laggy processor, but it is one option for Verizon customers.

It's hard to find a good feature phone these days when such handsets are more often replaced by entry-level smartphones, leaving those seeking an in-betweener phone--more than a basic flip phone but less than a smartphone--with a drying pool of options. Although smartphones are more sophisticated and seamless than feature phones, they also come with a monthly data plan when you buy them on contract, and more features than some people want. Enter the Samsung Brightside, a QWERTY keyboard slider phone with some extras, but not a ton, and a throwback interface that hearkens to days when feature phones ruled our corner of the globe.

A few years back, the Brightside would have qualified as a higher-end QWERTY keyboard feature phone, since it has hookups for e-mail and IM, and social networks like Twitter and Facebook. It can also read Office files in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and PDFs, and the keyboard is comfortable and easy to type on. The Brightside is also tuned in to 3G speeds, possesses a 3.2-megapixel camera, and has the on-contract price of $100 with a new two-year service agreement (after a $50 mail-in rebate).

I have nothing against feature phones per se, but on the Brightside, I wish that Samsung and Verizon had tried harder to offer a slicker interface, or at least an updated software experience, with smoother graphics and the addition of third-party social networking and e-mail apps that look like they're in line with the times. My eyes register interfaces that feel more 2007 than 2012. If that doesn't concern you, you may warm to the Brightside. However, if you're flexible, you could also consider the Pantech Jest 2, or even more-advanced Android smartphones that cost less (some are free on special sales), but do exact a monthly data fee. I suggest the HTC Rhyme, Samsung Illusion, and Motorola Droid Pro, which are just three that cost nothing at the time of this review, and the latter incorporates a QWERTY keyboard in portrait mode.

Design
It doesn't come in flashy colors or have any eye-catching outcroppings, but the Brightside still isn't your typical device. A few interesting touches on the touch screen and on the hardware itself keep things interesting, though I'm not entirely sold on every decision.

A what, you say? Yep, the Samsung Brightside is a feature phone like we haven't seen in years.

First, let's look at the phone's form. It's all-black, with a nubbly matte back and a glossy metallic rim around the face. This isn't one of those ultrathin devices. In fact, by today's standards, it's a bit stout, at 4.4 inches tall by 2.4 inches wide and 0.57 inch thick (in part because of the keyboard). The Brightside's 4.3 ounce weight makes it feel solid and sturdy enough, but the handset is basic and not especially polished.

Compared with today's jumbo screens, the 3.1-inch touch display on the Brightside isn't very vast. However, as long as you're not typing on the screen using the cramped virtual keyboard, it manages not to feel overly small. Unfortunately, the QVGA resolution (240x320 pixels) does feel a little pixelated and primitive on the TFT screen, which supports 262,000 colors.

That isn't to say that I don't appreciate Samsung's efforts with its proprietary operating system. The Brightside is a touch-screen phone, and Samsung has tried to make navigating around as accessible and straightforward as possible. To that end, there's a setup wizard that walks you through various options to set your personal sound profile, wallpaper, and themes. You can also go back in to rearrange menu items, and the layout is easy on the eye.

Less successful is the fact that Samsung has pasted the phone menu right on the screen, with large, finger-friendly icons. I take no issue with the icons themselves, but I did keep inadvertently opening apps whenever my finger accidentally brushed the unlocked phone face; this happened often enough to become a nuisance. In addition to the menu grid, there are fixed buttons for accessing voice mail, the call log, the dial pad, and your address book.

Moving on from the screen, let's look at the simple, useful navigation buttons just below the display. There's send, there's power/end, and there's the shared button between them that goes back and that launches voice actions. I like how Samsung made Nuance's voice command feature readily discoverable, instead of placing it as a tiny unknown button on the side of the phone, or as an obscure onscreen control.

Flip over the Brightside to find the 3.2-megapixel camera lens (no flash on this one). On the left spine you'll find the volume rocker, and on the right are the lock button and camera shutter button. The 3.5mm headset jack is up top, and the Micro-USB charging port is on the bottom. Behind the back cover is the microSD card slot that takes up to 32GB in external storage.

Features
Where to begin? Since this is a feature phone you're looking at, and not a smartphone, you shouldn't expect all the whistles and bells to make it onto the Brightside. And they don't. The phone does support 3G speeds, Bluetooth, and GPS, which are more or less the basics.

The Brightside's keyboard is a win: comfortable and responsive.

Samsung transform (Sprint) ultra

The good: How has his sibling on boost mobile Samsung transform ultra a clear Android gingerbread interface, a front-facing camera, and a fair price.

The bad: The keypad on the Samsung could turn ultra rise a bit higher, and could improve camera quality.

The bottom line: People looking for a phone with a QWERTY keyboard find ultra in the Samsung transform a reliable mid-tier device, if $20 more a better phone nab might.

It is rare for parent company Sprint show a mobile phone after one of the mobile operator, but this is exactly the order of arrival for the Samsung transform Ultra, the first on boost mobile about three weeks debuted early October before the handset on Sprint was available.

An Android 2.3 gingerbread slider phone, transform ultra features a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and a fast 'pure' Android experience, save out to the Sprint ID, a gallery of "identities" certain apps, background images and links (it's called Mobile ID boost.) The handset runs on a 1 GHz Qualcomm processor, has a 3, 5-inch HVGA screen, a 3, a 2-megapixel camera, an by to touch front-facing VGA camera and 3 g support.

It costs $79.99 with a two year contract after a mail-in rebate $50 and with a new two-year service contract.

Editors Note: Due to an identical design as transform ultra for boost mobile, this report covers only the differences in the functions and performance on the Sprint network. For the complete overview of design and most of the features, see the Samsung transform review ultra for boost mobile.

Functions
The transform ultra with boost mobile, with Sprint version of access to a variety of Google services, including mapping, navigation, Google places and so on. Indicates hot-spot support Sprint hotspot with support for Wi-Fi direct, for direct connection it according to enabled devices. The Swype virtual keyboard is installed by default.

The Samsung transform ultra features a 3.2, 5-inch HVGA touch screen and 1 GHz processor.

2100 New gTLD Applications. What Does It Mean?

Over the course of the last week, ICANN has released several pieces of information that taken together begin to allow us to piece together the overall gTLD landscape. ICANN is releasing partial information, without explanation or context, in dribs and drabs, and rumors are flying that we won't get the "Reveal" (the release of full information on applications and applicants for new gTLDs) until the ICANN meeting in Prague at the end of June.

This partial information and delay from ICANN is creating consternation and confusion among the many applicants and those watching the new gTLD scene. Therefore some analysis, however imperfect, will help. What follows is what we at Minds + Machines consider a likely scenario based on the facts we have, along with some estimates and calculations that we think are reasonable. This is back-of-the-envelope stuff, but it shows how we see the new landscape forming.

First, let's start with what we know for sure:

There are 1,268 total applicant profiles in ICANN's system (the TAS), each of which allows 1-50 applicationsThere were 2,091 applications in the TAS as of April 12, 2012There were 214 unpaid applications

Given that the application window was suspended with just twelve hours to go, we believe that anyone who hasn't paid yet isn't going to, and that people who are paying for their applications aren't leaving any unpaid. In other words, we don't think the 214 unpaid applications are ever going to happen, and that there's a rough one-to-one correspondence between unpaid apps and number of applicants with unpaid apps. Therefore there are roughly 200 applicants who are not actually going to submit 214 apps.

This leaves us with about 1,000 bona fide applicants and 2100 applications, or roughly 2 TLDs for every applicant. But we can break down these numbers a little further based on industry information.

Categorizing 2100 new gTLD applications

We can divide up the applicant groups into five buckets:

Geographical applicants, applying for cities, states or regions.Applicants applying for a specific individual project: one or in some cases two names.IDN applications, applying for generic names in a non-Latin script.Portfolio applicants, applying for 20 TLDs or more.Brand applicants, applying for their trademarked names.

There will be exceptions to these generalizations, but overall these categories are clear. But how many of each? The breakdown is important, because it will determine how the competition for high-value generic names will play out. We assume that geos, IDNs and brands are going to face little or no competition because of the favorable ICANN rules in (for geos and brands) or language specificity (IDNs). Therefore the contention is most like to occur among and between the smaller applicants and portfolio applicants who are applying for English-language generic-word TLDs. Looking at each category, we can identify some further characteristics:

Geo Domains

We estimate 50 geographic domains. Some of these have been in the news, but many others have not. This category includes US cities such as Las Vegas and NYC to European cities such as London, Paris, Berlin and Madrid, states such as Bavaria and NRW, and Japanese cities such as Tokyo and Osaka, and of course the entire continent of Africa. Altogether we do not predict more than 50 geo domains. We are estimating one application per applicant (for these purposes, we consider the geographic entity to be the applicant, even if the official "applicant" is another entity with a letter of support).

Niche Applicants

These are individual non-IDN applicants, applying for just one or two generic-word names such as .KIWI, .MUSIC, .HIV and .RADIO. We estimate that these probably represent another 100 applicants and 150 total applications. This is a very rough estimate based on who has been present at ICANN, or .NXT, or other industry meetings. These applicants will compete with one another and often, but not always with portfolio investors for generic terms — as the projects, such as .HIV, may serve a very specific purpose.

IDNs

IDN applicants, in our calculation, represent another 100+ applicants. We know already of applicants for Russian, Chinese and Arabic strings. While we don't have very good knowledge about these applicants, our cloudy crystal ball says that the number of IDN applications will be around 10% of the total, or 200, and that on average IDN applicants will have 2 applications each. We foresee limited competition between IDNs, and by definition little competition with Latin-characters gTLDs. Note that IDNs could represent brands as well as generic terms and niche products, this is factored into our estimate of 100 applicants, 200 apps.

Portfolio Applicants

Portfolio applicants will be few. With the high cost of applications, there are probably no more than 20 portfolio applicants (such as ourselves) applying for more than 10 TLDs. We will know better when ICANN provides definitive information, but that is our estimate. By estimating 25 apps (on average) per portfolio, we predict a total of 500 applications from portfolio applicants. TLDH is applying for significantly more than the average for its own account; we don't think that ours is the highest number, but we believe it is in the top five.

Brands

Brands will, with some exceptions, apply just for their trademarks. Based on our previous analysis, anything that isn't a geo, niche project, IDN or portfolio app is an english language brand app. This gives us a total of 1,200 brand apps, and 730 brands. This implies about 1.65 applications per brand — which is in the general ballpark of the earlier estimate by Fairwinds of 2.2 applications per brand. Verisign has announced 220 applications, the vast majority of which we assume to be brands, many of them from Melbourne IT. We assume that other major registry service providers, particularly Neustar with their loss-leader $10,000 application consulting fee, but also non-U.S. providers like GMO, will have the rest of the brands.

Note that the biggest variable in our analysis is the number of portfolio applications. The number is not likely to be significantly larger than 500, however, as it would reduce the number of applications per brand below credible levels. For example, if there were 1,000 portfolio apps done by the small number of portfolio players, then it would imply 700 brands with 700 apps — not a likely ratio in our opinion. It seems more likely to us that the number of portfolio apps are in the 300-600 range.

Conclusion

The foregoing gives us the following view:

Geos: 50 applicants – 50 apps (3%) Niche applicants: 100 applicants – 150 apps (7%) IDNs: 100 applicants – 200 apps (10%) Portfolio: 20 applicants: 500 apps (25%)Brands: 730 applicants: 1,200 apps (60%)

Total: 1000 applicants, 2100 apps

We therefore see about 700 applications being likely candidates for contention (niche plus portfolio apps). Some strings (.WEB, .MUSIC) are known to have multiple applicants. Others, such as .KIWI, are likely to face no competition. Overall we think that about two thirds (466) of our 700 of these will end up in contention, and of those 466 about half (233) will have more than two contenders.

So, our very rough back-of-the-envelope calculation says that of the 2100 applications, about 233 will have exactly two parties in contention, and these have a much higher likelihood of being settled without an auction. Another 233 will have more than two contenders, which makes a deal more difficult, but by no means impossible. At the end of the day, then, we estimate that ICANN is going to have about 100-125 auctions.

Batching

A word about batching. This is a very difficult area because ICANN hasn't released much information about how it's going to happen (which by the way makes any "digital archery" service somewhat suspect). ICANN has said they will pay attention to geographic diversity as well as to "skill" in the digital archery game, but they have also said that applications in contention sets will go in the first batch, which would mean that brands, geos, and IDNs would be sparsely represented in the first batch.

But it is also not at all clear to us that the batches cannot be staggered instead of back-to-back; work on a subsequent batch can begin even before the previous one is finished. Concluding that 2000 apps will take until 2014 is by no means a given if ICANN uses their new-found $350 million windfall wisely. The evaluations should go quickly, particularly since the estimate of how long it will take is based on the fiction that evaluators will be looking at 500 unique applications per batch. They won't: there are perhaps 15 qualified registry service providers in the world, and therefore ICANN will not be faced with more than that number of unique tech sections — the great majority of the application — in the submissions they receive. Even though ICANN is headquartered at what has become known as "Marina Delay," it is difficult to imagine that with resources at its disposal, ICANN will not be able evaluate 2000 applications in 12 months.

Summary

Even though information is spotty, there's enough to start understanding what the post-application landscape will look like. The analysis above is our broad prediction.

If you build it, they will come.

Only two years after signing the DNS root zone, the strong temptation of a secure global infrastructure for the distribution of data begins, to reveal. It is illustrated clearly by two proposed technical standardization, who want to use secure DNS. These developments highlight the strength of the DNS institutions and how they might gaps elsewhere in Internet governance to a certain extent. But one on increasing confidence and concentration of power in the DNS correct makes always global governance also even more important.

First, better known is DANE desire the IETF. The DÄNE standard suggests the Protocol to improve transport level security (TLS), which used worldwide for secure communication between applications (such as a browser) and host computer (for example, a site server). DANE allows administrators of domain names specify TLS cryptographic key material into a resource record in a zone file stored. With DNSSEC, an application could be the resource record with the practical effect that the communication between an application and the host machine likely safer check - a good thing.

The most interesting aspect of DANE is perhaps that it placed TLS key distribution out of the hands of the browser/CAs and it with DNS operators. The browser/certificate authority regime has been shown to be vulnerable to attack, and lacking in clear lines of responsibility. In theory, if an administrator is signed key material in the DNA, an application can check administered by ICANN it from the single trust anchor. DANE depends how DNSSEC Registrar, registry, and Internet service provider, the administrators not tampered with the signed data. Pressure, data could manipulate from numerous sources, such as interests in the protection of intellectual property, advertising, monitoring, etc. come. At the end of the day, be the DNS-contractual regulation, which contributes the laws that govern the parties and the extent that these institutions are transnational interoperable, determined, global public policy objectives such as DANE at various such as freedom of expression and free movement in Internet information services. Expect that the differences between Governments and their response to domestic pressure to demand that interoperability.

The second, and in our opinion, more interesting development is the more recently proposed ROVER (route origin verification) effort aims, the problem of misconfigured routing announcements, whether accidental or intentional. Much like in DANE, published ROVER proposes , to improve the inter-domain routing create new resource records in the secure reverse DNS (i.e. the in-addr.arpa zone). Similar ideas proposed previouslybeen, but never took hold. The records could network operators to specify whether an IPv4 or IPv6 prefix should appear in the global routing tables and identify authorized origin autonomous system remaining for the prefix. These are the same data (i.e. source route advertisements) are in the public-key infrastructure (RPKI) resource is managed by displaying some RIRs. ROVER facilitates comparison of scanned records in the secure reverse DNS-against route announcements will be made over the Internet. Deviations can be marked and lead that further action by the operator.

The most interesting aspect is the interplay between technology and institutional makes. The technical community was discussed, has the advantages of secure DNS vs. RPKI. The debate occurs in the shade of the large, ongoing care for carriers of RPKI, i.e., how could it allow certification authorities (such as the RIRs) routing effects. This concern is further complicated with Border Gateway Protocol Security ((BGPSEC)), including cryptographic signing and validation of route advertisements directly in the BGP is proposing. As an alternative, ROVER hits uses the map data certified resource stored in the RPKI (or elsewhere) to create and validate route announcements in the secure reverse DNS. But it allows operators independently of each other, that data will be applied to routing decisions. If a certification authority a certificate would locked it no influence, forwarding, if the operator allows it. However, it is less appreciated, that ROVER potentially move announcement routes data, usually in the decentralized Internet routing registries (IRRS) now in the hierarchical secure DNS. Critical in the light of this, will the operation and management of a few zones, namely .arpa and in-addr.arpa. There are, currently, these zones managed by ICANN. Its use for routing purposes can trigger conflicts that too much power with this organization is centralized. In theory, ICANN operator contract could be as a manager of the in-addr zone, similar to how rules it does some TLD operators. This needs to be addressed further.
